MELBOURNE | Jaidee Thai is place we stumbled across by chance while walking up Victoria Street a little while ago. We’d wanted to visit our usual haunt for Thai in this part of town, Jinda Thai, but with a huge appetite and an almost hour long wait for a table, we decided to try our luck elsewhere. There’s next to nothing to be found about Jaidee Thai on the internet, but the menu looked good, and the restaurant was reasonably busy, so we decided to take our chances.

The place is simply fit-out – a few small wooden tables and chairs, and some Thai decorations on the walls. The menu contains all of the usual Thai favourites – Pad Thai, Som Tum, Grilled Skewers, and a variety of curries and stir fry dishes. We opted for a serve of grilled chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce, Som Tum Suaw Bpuu Pla La – a Laotian take on the Thai papaya salad, a seafood Panang curry, and a serve of grilled pork dumplings.

The flavours, while not quite as balanced or as we enjoy at the best Thai spots in town, were still punchy and all the dishes we had were very tasty. The Som Tum, in particular, packed a lot of spice – so much so that the next day, once the salad had and extra day to soak in the sauce as leftovers, we struggled to eat it. The grilled dishes were very tasty with a nice char to them, and the curry hit the spot nicely. The serving sizes were generous too, making for a great value meal.

Service was friendly and efficient, and staff were happy to answer our questions about various dishes on the menu. Jaidee Thai might not be the best Thai restaurant in town, but for a great value, decent tasting feed without a wait, it’s worth your consideration.
