MELBOURNE | Mamak Satti Power opened as a food truck in Coburg earlier this year, testing the waters, seeing how Melburnians reacted to their style of Singaporean Indian hawker food. It was a success, and last month they opened a bricks and spot in Carlton. I recently popped in to take a look for What’s on Melbourne.
Run by the family that started Adam’s Indian Rojak in Singapore’s Adam Road Food Centre, Mamak Satti Power is about showcasing the Singaporean Indian favourites found in Singapore’s hawker centres. The menu is much expanded from the food truck, with a diverse selection of dishes and variations to enjoy.
At the front you’ll see a bain-marie biryani station. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a fast, affordable, and tasty lunch to go. $10 gets you you choice of butter chicken, masala goat, or green tofu, with a side salad. Another great lunch option is the roti john. There’s 10 varieties of the Singaporean sandwich on offer, served with the obligatory chilli sauce. Fillings include things like mutton, sardines, and chicken.
The rest of the menu is cooked to order. It’s things like roti john, murtabak, prata, goreng, rojak, curries, assorted soups and specialities. Goreng comes with your choice of noodle – mee, Maggi, been hoon, kway teow; sweet and spicy diced goat; cheesy fries; and a sunny side up egg. It’s comfort food at its best.
Be sure to order some murtabak too. It’s nicely spiced and generously filled with chunks of egg and your protein of choice (chicken is the most popular). The dough is light, and perfectly pan fried. I also highly recommend the sop kambing. It’s a lightly spiced gingery broth filled with chunks of tender goat meat and crusty bread to dip.
If you have a sweet tooth, there’s gulab jamun served with ice-cream for dessert. To drink, it’s soft drinks, and classic Singaporean drinks like teh tarik, bandung, and Milo dinosaur.
