PERTH | Mechanics Institute is one of our favourite small bars in Perth, and has been consistently fantastic every time we’ve visited since it opened in 2012. It’s housed on a rooftop in Northbridge and accessible via stairs in the alleway behind the building. There’s a airy open space with seating outside, and a small section with couches and the bar itself inside.
The bar is inspired by the Mechanics Institutes which were established in the 1800s to provide adult education to working men as an alternative to gambling and drinking. Assorted pieces of machinery dot the venue in honour of these institutions, but of course the purpose of this Mechanics Institute isn’t to provide an alternative to drinking, but to provide quality drinking.
There’s a focus on quality drinks of all variety here. Cocktails are fantastic, and the selection of spirits is a cut above your usual bar. There’s always something new to try and the knowledgeable staff know the offering well. If spirits and cocktails aren’t what you’re into, there’s also a selection of great wine along with craft beer on tap and in cans, most of it local.
There’s no kitchen, but if you’re hungry you can order food from Flipside Burgers located directly below Mechanics Institute and eat it upstairs.
