MELBOURNE | Moon Dog World is the new Preston brewery and brewpub from Moon Dog Brewing, and takes the concept from their original Abbotsford brewery to the next level. Like the original, it’s a fun, eclectic space in an old industrial building, but that’s where the similarities end.

The space is 12,000 square meters large, big enough to hold 725 people. Inside there’s a water filled lagoon and waterfall, deck chairs, a dance floor and DJ booth, screens showing the sport, shipping crates with booths and video games and a 72 tap system linked to the visible refrigerated keg room. And there’s also an outdoor beer garden if all of that wasn’t enough. It’s very impressive.

On the taps you’ll find Moon Dog’s core range, along with seasonal and one-off beers, venue specific beers, and guest taps featuring beers from some of owners Josh and Jake Uljans and Karl van Buuren’s favourite breweries. There’s also cans and bottles in the fridge for those looking for something else, and a pending liquor license for take away purchases.

If you’re not into beer there’s still a lot for you too. Moon Dog World is run day-to-day by venue manager Chris Hysted-Adams (ex. Black Pearl), and he’s brought his cocktail pedigree over to ensure that there’s a good range of classic and creative cocktails on the menu. There’s also a very decent Australian-only wine list on offer.

When I visited for a preview event there were food trucks at the venue, but come launch it’ll be head chef Damon Phillippakos (ex. Terminus Hotel, North Fitzroy) and his team in control of the kitchen. The food is based around a similar philosophy to Moon Dog’s beers – interesting twists on the classics. Think Burgers, Buffalo Cauliflower, Baby Corn Dogs, Chipotle Beef Short Ribs, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder and Crispy Szechuan Eggplant with Toasted Sesame.

With 3 Ravens brewery around the corner and Jamsheed slated to open their winery/bar in the coming months, this part of Preston is fast becoming a go-to area for those looking for some tasty drinks and a whole lot of fun.
