Mövenpick Hotel Samarkand, Samarkand

MELBOURNE | Mövenpick Hotel Samarkand opened in late 2022, a significant renovation of the President Hotel (and later the Registan Plaza), which was built in the early 1990s. The interior retains a retro 1990s feel about it, updated for the modern era. The lobby is a large, open space that the entirety of the hotel’s rooms and dining spaces look onto.

Location

The hotel is located on Dagbitskaya Street (also known as Registan Street), roughly halfway between the central city park and Samarkand’s main historical sites. The Gur-Emir Mausoleum is about a 10 minute walk down the road, while Registan Square is a 20 minute walk away. By car, you can get to Samarkand International Airport in around 15 minutes, and the main Samarkand Railway Station (for the Afrosiyob high-speed train from Tashkent) in around 12 minutes.

Rooms

Mövenpick Hotel Samarkand features 165 rooms and suites, ranging from standard Superior King and Twin rooms, up to larger Executive Suites.

The rooms feature a contemporary, functional design with warm wood panelling, neutral colour tones, and subtle Uzbek geometric patterns in the textiles. Beds are well-sized and comfortable, with nicely firm pillows.

Each room includes air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with international channels, a work desk and chair, an electronic safe, a mini fridge with complimentary bottled water, and a kettle with tea and instant coffee supplies. Bathrooms feature a marble finish with a walk-in rainwater shower or shower-over-tub combination, plush towels, and Mövenpick-branded bath and body amenities. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and throughout the property.

Amenities

The hotel features an indoor heated swimming pool and a small outdoor pool for the summer months. Next to the indoor pool, you’ll find a wellness area with a Finnish sauna, steam room, and a small fitness centre equipped with basic cardio machines and free weights.

There are several multi-purpose event spaces and meeting rooms on-site, as well as an official gift shop in the lobby selling traditional Uzbek handicrafts, ceramics, and suzani embroidery. Free private parking is provided on-site.

Eat & Drink

The main dining space, Chatqal Restaurant, serves a daily buffet breakfast alongside an a la carte menu for lunch and dinner featuring a mix of European, Mediterranean, and traditional Uzbek dishes like plov, manti, and shashlik.

For a drink, head to the Atrium Lobby Lounge & Bar, serving coffee, cocktails, and light bites throughout the day.

As with all Mövenpick hotels around the world, there’s a daily “Chocolate Hour” held in the lobby lounge from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, offering complimentary chocolate treats, pastries, and truffles to staying guests.

The Verdict

Mövenpick Hotel Samarkand delivers a reliable, comfortable place to stay in Samarkand, with a great location. I like the way that the hotel has been updated to modern standards, while retaining its original 1990s character.
