SANTIAGO | Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts) was established in 1880 and is the oldest art museum in South America. Housed in the beautiful Beaux-arts Palacio de Bellas Artes, which was built in 1910, the museum showcases the largest collection of sculptures and the second largest collection of paintings in Chile.
The museum’s collection contains over 5,000 pieces, but not all are on display. The focus of the collection is on Chilean and South American art, but there are also pieces by Italian, Spanish and Flemish painter as well as African sculptures.
For those interested in more contemporary art, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Museum of Contemporary Art) is also located inside Palacio de Bellas Artes, towards the back.
