HEALESVILLE | Housed inside a former cabinet-making factory in the Yarra Valley, directly across from Four Pillars Distillers, you’ll find No.7 Healesville. It’s a restaurant from the Frazer family, who you might know from their venues Stones of the Yarra Valley, Meletos, and Il Massaggio. Visit, and you’ll be treated to some of the best food and wine in the region.
Originally opened in 2019 as an urban winery for young winemakers to launch their new labels, No. 7 is now fully focused on the restaurant. There’s a courtyard out front, and a natural light-filled main dining room with tall ceilings and eclectic antiques. For events, there’s a private dining room and barrel room.
Head chef Joel Bowers’ menu is ever-changing. It’s driven by seasonality, what’s fresh and best on the day, and what’s inspiring him at the time. Dishes are simple at heart, and creative. It’s the kind of food that emphasises the quality and flavour of the ingredients.
Tartare with quail egg, chives, and crisps is a perfectly executed classic that highlights its components. Ramarro Farm crispy zucchini flower on green sauce, meanwhile, is a tempura-like treat that encapsulates the season. Other dishes, like white anchovy toast with sauce gribiche, asparagus and buffalo mozzarella, and slow-cooked Roaring Forties lamb neck with peas and pine nuts, are all great examples of the kitchen’s philosophy.
Given the venue’s past life as a urban winery, a hub of exiting new winemakers, and location in the Yarra Valley, it comes as no surprise that the wine list at No. 7 is outstanding. The focus is on local organic wines, along with a few interesting options from exciting winemakers further abroad. Options by the glass vary, depending on what the staff and customers are feeling that day. It’s always fun, interesting stuff.
