MELBOURNE | Coffee maestros ONA Coffee opened their first cafe in Canberra in 2008. They expanded to Sydney in 2018, and earlier this year opened their first Melbourne cafe.

Located in an old warehouse in the back streets of Brunswick, Ona Melbourne, the cafe continues the coffee forward focus of its counterparts. I’d not been to any of Ona’s cafes before, so was really curious about this one.

There are around 20 different coffees on offer at any given time, all of which are directly and ethically sourced from over 100 growers in 10 countries. Most coffees are served black, but there are a few milk based options too. Unlike most other cafes, it’s more about choosing the bean with the flavour profile that appeals to you, and the drinking it brewed the recommended way.

I tried the Founder blend, a milk based espresso coffee with notes of rich chocolate and berries, and and Ethiopian Jasper filter. I also grabbed some single origin Ethiopian beans for home, and have grabbed several more bags of beans since.

Food wise, it’s a small menu of typical Melbourne brunch fare. Classics with a twist, that sort of thing. Well worth trying is the delicious chicken roll (pic one), which features salt & pepper fried chicken, sambal oelek mayo, carrot, cucumber, daikon, coriander, and iceberg lettuce inside a Turkish roll from Alasya. There’s also Ona’s take on avo on toast – avocado, whipped corn tofu, olive tapenade, seed granola, sprouts, and pickled shallots atop Ovens Street Bakery light rye sourdough.

I visited between lock down 1.0 and lockdown 2.0. During lock down, they’re still open for take away food and coffee, and retail bean sales.
