MELBOURNE | Prospect Bagels have a simple proposition – to bring proper New York style bagels to Melbourne. It’s always been hard to get proper bagels in Melbourne and while things have improved in recent years there’s still space in the market for new players who want to give it a shot. This is what owner Dan and his partner realised when they moved to Melbourne after a year long stint in the US. After becoming accustomed to the real thing in New York, they realised that they had only 2 options – move back or do it themselves. Using the bagels from their favourite bagel shop on the corner of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park as a template, Dan and his partner set about creating the same thing in Melbourne. Prospect bagels is the culmination of all of this.

The bagels are hand made and boiled using high quality, high gluten flour which is a necessity to get that dense chewiness that bagels require. There are a few options available – cinnamon raisin, plain, everything, poppy and sesame. To go with this, a range of cream cheeses are also offered. We tried all of the bagels and while they all tasted great our favourite was the everything, which is a plain bagel that’s coated with garlic, onion, salt, poppy, sesame, and caraway seeds. A New York favourite, it pairs well with the olive and jalapeño cream cheese. The cinnamon raisin is a great breakfast option too, especially during these cold winter mornings.

You can currently get Prospect Bagels 2 ways. The first is to use the online order form – choose the bagels that you want, pick a delivery date and check the website to see when Dan will be at each of the 4 CBD delivery stops that day. If you’re ordering 12 of more you might even be able to get them delivered to your door (hint they freeze really well – we always have a few backup bagels in the freezer) The other is to look out for Prospect Bagels at your local farmers market.
