SYDNEY | Pub Life Kitchen Ultimo is a place that consistently appears on lists when searching for Sydney’s best burger, so it was only a matter of time before we paid this little unassuming spot in the back room of the historic Lord Wolseley Hotel a visit. There are only 4 burgers on the menu – the O.G., the cheeseburger, the vegetarian burger and the crunchy chicken fillet burger. Owner Jovan Curic believes that simplicity is key when it comes to burgers, and lets the quality of the produce he uses and the combination of ingredients do the talking.
The most important thing in any burger is the patty and indeed this was the first thing that we noticed when we bit into our O.G. burger. The 200g NSW pasture fed chuck beef patty is thick, salt cured, minced in-house and served medium rare. It’s char grilled to perfection and is a thing of beauty and so full of flavour. The beef patty is joined by Jack cheese, house cured pickles, tomato, iceberg lettuce and aioli, all in between a soft bun with the perfect texture. The chips are no slouches either. Thin chips that somehow manage to get that soft on the inside super crunchy on the outside combo that you usually only get from a thicker chip. We’d heard people wax lyrical about the Pub Life Kitchen burgers plenty of times but weren’t expecting to be so wowed by the chips.
Other menu options include the hot sticky chicken wings, polenta chips and occasionally, dessert. We’ve heard amazing things about the sometimes special Snickers Sundae which consists of Snickers gelato covered in gooey dulce de leche, salted peanuts and pork crackle. As if we needed any more reasons to return.
