MELBOURNE | ReWine was founded at Preston Market by Marshall Waters in 2005. The idea was to shake up the industry by selling wine straight from the barrel, into special refillable bottles for takeaway, or serving straight into the glass without using a bottle at all.
In that time, the focus on sustainability in society more generally has continued to grow, and so has ReWine. While the original Preston location is no longer around, Marshall, along with his son Charlie, have since expanded to the Queen Victoria Market, Brunswick East and, as of a few weeks ago, Fitzroy.
The Fitzroy location, located on the ever more interesting Rose Street, just across from the recently opened Moon Cruller, stays true to the core philosophy of the business. Trying delicious wines in a sustainable way. Barrels line the wall behind the bar, all connected to a tap system which is used to fill glasses as bottles.
The space is designed to be friendly and welcoming. Tastings are available, and the friendly staff are happy to talk you though the wines and the various sustainability initiatives in place. As much as it is about enjoying great wine, ReWine also serves an educational role in showing people why selling wine in this way is the way forward.
To-go, the concept is simple. Your first purchase includes a refundable deposit on a 750ml glass bottle (you can buy it in larger containers if you wish). You choose your wine, and the bottle is filled, before being sealed using a special argon-gas system to ensure no oxidation or tainting occurs. When you’re done, bring your washed bottle back for a refill. Because the wines are sourced directly from the producers, without the costs associated with the traditional packaging process, they’re also cheaper than the retail price you’ll find elsewhere.
If you’re hungry, there’s a few fridges and small pantry section to the side, and you can enjoy cheese boards, bread, and charcuterie with your wine, whether at the venue or to-go.
