MELBOURNE | When the folks from Si Señorita Bar got in contact about their just launched side project The Sugar Papi, and asked if I’d like to sample a gifted box of their treats, I didn’t hesitate to accept. An assortment of different flavoured churros, alfajores (more Argentinean style rather than Mexican style ones), and contios to sample? Definitely up my alley.
At the same time, I realised that I’d not eaten anything from the Si Señorita menu before, so decided to order some Mexican food for a lockdown dinner as well. Alex and the team kindly refused to let me pay for any of it, so I said hey just bring me whatever you think I need to be eating. And that they did.
The superstar of the lockdown menu, beef and vego birria tacos (the chefs are from Jalisco, Mexico, where birria was created), along with cheesy chicken quesedillas, totopos, and a whole lot of guacamole and salsa. And a couple or margaritas to top things off.
It made for a very enjoyable Saturday dinner. The next day I walked down to the restaurant and picked up my dessert box, which I also enjoyed. Don’t worry if you can’t eat it all in one hit either (there’s a lot there). The churros are best eaten on the day, but the alfajores and contios will keep well in an airtight container for a whole week.
Both the Si Señorita menu and the Sugar Papi dessert box are being delivered across Melbourne during lockdown. A great option for savoury and sweet Mexican treats.
All that’s left is to convince them to do an OG goat birria Ameca style (I haven’t had a good version since I was at Birrieria Zaragoza in South Chicago years ago) and cow’s head birria Mascota style as a one off special. Would you be in for that?
