MELBOURNE | Sir Charles is a Fitzroy cafe that’s part of the every expanding Coffee Culture Communication Group (Au79, Blue Fox, Liar Liar, Prospect Espresso) and serves up breakfast and lunch dishes that are familiar but with an Asian twist. The former Beans and Bagels space has been completely transfromed into an open, light filled space full of white surfaces, light wood furniture, and concrete floors.

The most famous of the Asian inspired dishes here is the signature eggs Benedict with panko-crumbed eggs, bacon, and Sriracha hollandaise on roti. Introduced to the menu by original chef Tyler Preston back in 2015 when Sir Charles first opened, the dish still stands out as a highlight on the menu, although we have noticed a dip in consistency since Preston left. Case in point – the poached eggs, which used to be perfectly poached each time, were inconsistently cooked the last time we visited – one egg was watery, while the other was almost hard boiled. Eggs aside, everything about this dish – its flavours and textures, remind us of why we enjoy it.

Other dishes that we enjoy include the Belgian waffle with crispy meringue, jelly tip ice cream, marshmallow and fresh berries, and the KFC burger – Korean fried chicken with house made kimchi, cos lettuce, and burnt chilli mayonnaise on brioche served with kimchi fries.

Coffee is fantastic, and uses beans roasted by Coffee Culture Communication Group’s cafe and roastery Au79. A wide range of brewing methods, and milks are on offer meaning there’s something to please everyone. For those after something non caffeinated, there’s also tea, juices, smoothies, local craft beers and a selection of mostly local wines.

Consistency issues (in both the food and service) mean that Sir Charles isn’t quite the guaranteed hitter it was up until the Coffee Culture Communication Group takeover, but it still gets enough right most of the time to make it worth a visit.
