BOGOTA | Statua Rota Brewery is one of the new wave of craft breweries trying to change the reputation of beer in Columbia. Since opening its brewpub in the up and coming Chapinero Alto neighbourhood in 2017, Statua Rota has built a reputation for brewing some of the best beer in Bogota.
A chance encounter with a Belgian visitor in the Amazon several years ago led artist Alejandro Torres to expand his knowledge of beer and, with the help of his brother Misaac, they started started Statua Rota. Located in what looks like an old house, the two storey brewpub takes obvious cues from craft beer venues in the USA. Wood panelled walls, a pool table, hip-hop and rock music, and upcycled furniture give the space a very hip vibe, which reminded me of some of the places I visited in Austin, Texas.
The breweries four core range beers are available on tap year ’round, along with a few rotating seasonal options. A tasting paddle is available for those who want to try everything, and there are a few beers you can’t get on tap in bottles. Lymantria, a 5.2% ABV Witbier is well worth trying, an incorporates the Amazonian fruit lulo along with grapefruit peels for a familiar, yet distinctly Colombian taste. Datura, a 8.5% ABV American Strong Ale brewed with notes of fig, ginger and caramel, is also well worth trying.
For those who don’t like beer, Statua Rota has a decent selection of spirits and cocktails, along with some very tasty food. The burgers are well worth a try, as is the bistek, a Colombian take on the beef steak cooked with cooked with onions, tomatoes and cumin.
