MELBOURNE | Steels Gate Wines @ Shantell is a cellar door and cafe in Dixons Creek, in the heart of the Yarra Valley. Owners Brad Atkins and Matthew Davis started making wines under the Steels Gate banner in 2009 but until 2018, when they purchased Shantell wines, there wasn’t a cellar door where curious wine lovers could go to sample all of their wines. The cellar door is a quaint, homely, cottage-like space that looks out onto some stunning Yarra Valley scenery.
Both labels of wine are offered at the cellar door – wines from the home block in Steels Creek use grapes grown on 5 acres of 25-30 year old non-irrigated vines, while the Shantell wines are similarly non-irrigated and surrounded by National parkland. There’s an assortment of sparking, white and red wines on offer, with something for everyone on the list. We’re particular fans of the Steels Gate Chardonnay and Shantell Pinot Noir.
The cafe offering is cheese and light modern Australian dishes made using local ingredients grown on site where possible. We spoke to Brad when we visited, who told us to keep an eye on the menu which is going to be revamped into a more modern, share plate offering.
