MELBOURNE | Strangeloves Wine Bar is one of the stalwarts of the Moonee Ponds bar scene, and has been doing its thing since 2010. The bar, named after Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 movie “Dr. Strangelove”, is a real local’s bar. Walking through it is almost like being at a friend’s house for a dinner party circa 1930, with each room having a slightly different, yet cohesive, feel.

It’s not just the space that feels homely, with its cozy decor and furniture. Husband and wife duro Chris and Nikki Exell extend the community feel to all facets of the bar’s operation. Take, for example, the four wines available by the glass. Each day, the first four guests choose their two favourite reds and whites from the almost 500 bottle strong wine list. The price of each bottle is divided by four to decide that day’s by the glass list.

It’s not just wine that’s great here either. There’s a great spirit selection, and some top notch local craft beers too. Food wise, it’s things like cheese, cured meats, and croquettes, along with tasting plates that go well with drinks. The $30 farmer’s board is great value, with a generous selection of meats, cheeses, pate, toasted bread, mustard, and pickles.
