MELBOURNE | Stray Neighbour is both a bar and a restaurant in Preston but unlike many places that manage to operate as one better than the other, Stray Neighbour thrives in both modes.
Owners Ben and Dan Stray have built a venue that represents new Preston. The large open former panel-beater space would be at home in Collingwood and Fitzroy, with high ceilings, large windows, and an industrial feel. Greenery hands throughout the venue to warm things up a bit and the side saloon section with lower ceilings, couches, booths, and a pool table is cozier still. Outside, there’s a patio for when the weather’s good. Overall, Stray Neighbour is a great spot for those looking for a sit down meal or just a few drinks.
It’s a modern Australian menu with European leanings. Think grilled asparagus with with romesco & salted ricotta, grilled chicken skewers with spicy roasted pepper salsa, and 12 hour braised brisket with with labneh, pickle & herb salad.
On weekends only breakfast is also offered – a selection of things from the main lunch and dinner menu along with more typical breakfast fare like brioche French toast with spiced pear, whipped cheesecake, pecans, honey, and chorizo and eggs on sourdough.
For drinks there are 12 seasonally rotating local craft beer taps along with a predominantly Australian wine list and classic cocktails.
