LONDON | The Birdcage has been serving the people of Bethnal Green fine ales since 1760, the name referring to the popular custom of keeping caged birds which was introduced to the East End by the Huguenots in the 17th century. The currently building was constructed in the 19th century and was a Truman’s pub, which has been through a lot over the years. It was partially destroyed during World War II, but kept open throughout by owners Mr & Mrs Joel. Most recently, it was run by husband and wife Teresa and John Farnham, for 21 years until 2012.
In 2014 the pub became part of the Draft House chain of craft beer pubs, but the atmosphere inside still has a local’s feel to it. It’s been spruced up (it had become run down since the Farnham’s left) but still looks very much like a traditional pub, albeit with some modern touches – a dash of neon here and some filament lighting there. Gone are the regular beers of old, to be replaced by an impressive selection of craft beers on tap and in bottles, along with a range of spruced up pre-mixed cocktails courtesy of Draft House drinks maestro Max Chater.
Food is kept simple and is all about the pies, which are supplied by Square Pie Co and served with mash & mushy peas.
The Birdcage of old might no longer exist, but it’s still a welcoming, cozy place where you can enjoy great beer and pies with friends, and even get involved in a bit of singalong should the mood strike and the stars align. It’s the kind of place you’d be happy to call your local, and a venue worth venturing to if you find yourself in the area.
