MELBOURNE | The Cellar Door is a multi-level bar in Eastland Shopping Centre’s food and drink focused “Town Square” area that brings a unique offering to the area that really takes what one expects from a shopping mall venue to the next level. Owned by the people behind Croydon’s Bekendales and The Public Brewery, The Cellar Door is dedicated to showcasing the food and wine of the Yarra Valley region. Each of the venue’s five distinct spaces does this in a slightly different manner.
There’s the casual Public Bar, which features local beers and wines, the Dining Room, with a locally sourced, seasonal produce focused menu, the Providore & Bottle Shop, which sells locally sourced products, a Mezzanine Bar, which offers premium Yarra Valley wines and Australian spirits, and the Rooftop Garden, which features a bar surrounded by edible kitchen gardens and a massive timber arbour.
For food its an assortment of charcuterie and cheese, entrees, mains, sides and desserts. It’s simple food that allows the quality of the produce to shine. Think kingfish crudo with avocado puree, coriander relish and lemon, grilled sirloin with chimichurri and dijon, and chocolate mousse with coffee ice cream and orange curd.
The drinks list is extensive and champions local, small producers. The 30 strong wine list features producers like Rob Dolan, Thick As Thieves, and Mac Forbes, while the 40 strong beer list features a wide range of styles from breweries like Hargreves Hill, Bridge Road, and Bad Shepherd. You’ll also find several of the Public Brewery’s own beers too of course.
Too often, the outer suburbs are neglected when it comes to quality openings, the like of which you find all the time in inner Melbourne, but the Cellar Door proves that there’s a market for this sort of thing in areas you wouldn’t normally find it. It’s a great option for locals looking for a quality drink and feed, and for those not in the area, being only a two minute walk from Ringwood Station means that it’s easy to head over and check it out.
