SYDNEY | The Grounds Of The City is the CBD outpost of famed Sydney cafe, The Grounds of Alexandria. Like it’s older sibling, the aesthetics of the space are beautiful. It’s modelled after a Parisian bistro with vintage books on shelves made from 300-year-old French oak vintage coffee grinders, cast-enamel doors, custom-built stained-glass windows, old butler trays, and a grand pressed metal ceiling.
Also like its older sibling, The Ground of the City is about substance as well as style. The menu changes throughout the day, working its way from breakfast dishes through to heartier dinner fare. For breakfast it’s things like brioche French toast with ricotta, fresh strawberries, honeycomb and macadamia brittle, tea soaked fruit salad with gluten-free granola, pomegranate, cinnamon and almond yoghurt, and chunky potato hash with herbed portobello mushrooms, manchego, sautéed kale and poached free-range eggs.
For lunch and dinner, it’s things like roasted bone marrow with braised oxtail and green onion pancake, Oakey Reserve flank steak sandwich with onion rings, aged cheddar, horseradish and garden radish salad, and crispy Fried 5 spice arrow squid with burnt pineapple, fermented cabbage and aioli.
If it’s a drink you’re after, there’s the fantastic house roasted coffee that the Grounds is known for, brewed and served in a variety of ways, along with tea, wines, cocktails, and house made smoothies. Try the creative affogato – house-made Tiramisu ice-cream served with an espresso shot, finished with natural popping candy. It’s a delight.
You can of course, dine in at the lovely space, but if you’re in a hurry, there’s a dedicated barista window where you can order a selection of drinks and dishes to go.
