SYDNEY | The Noble Hops is a craft beer bar in Redfern that stands out in many ways from other craft beer spots in Sydney. Many of Sydney’s craft beer venues are either brewpubs or traditional pubs that have been updated with a craft beer focus. Inspired by the craft beer bars he visited in the USA, Noble Hops owner Joe Wee decided to bring something different to the scene with his bar – a small, quiet spot for locals with a focus on beer. No sport, no pokies.
The space is indeed small – the long and narrow low ceiling brick and wood affair has a capacity of 60. There are a bunch of stools, along with some regular tables and chairs. There’s also a lot of cycling paraphernalia.
Across the Noble Hops’ 10 taps you’ll find some of the most interesting beers in Sydney, many of which you won’t find elsewhere in the city. The taps always feature an assortment of local and international beers, and there are often showcases of different breweries, regions, and styles. The last time we visited was during Sydney good beer week, and the taps were full of rare sour beers from Colorado’s Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, and Melbourne’s Boatrocker.
For those who want something other than what’s on tap, there’s a 50 strong bottle list featuring an assortment of beers from around the world, mostly the USA. And if you’re not into beer, there’s a very decent whiskey range here, along with six off-the-menu wines and classic cocktails.
Those who don’t consider themselves to be craft beer connoisseurs needn’t feel intimidated – there are always a few accessible brews on offer, and Joe is more than happy to have a chat about beer, or anything else for that matter. When we visited Joe sat down and had a chat with us, and it was obvious that he really loves running this bar, chatting with customers, and making sure they have a great experience.
There’s no food (apart from free popcorn) at the Noble Hops, but you’re more than welcome to order wood-fired pizza from La Coppola across the road – they’ll deliver your pizza to your table when it’s ready.
