SYDNEY | The Welcome Hotel is a Rozelle institution, and has been serving drink and food to locals since 1878. Until recently, however, it was just a typical local’s pub – a decent food and drink offering for locals but nothing to make it stand out. That changed in 2014 when Liam O’Keeffe purchased the pub and transformed it into a venue that retains its history while offering something much more than the standard pub.

The main room maintains the traditional pub feel with dark exposed brick walls, carpet, and an L shaped dark wooden bar. At the back is a small beer garden, and to the side a dining room offering a more refined, Italian menu versus the more pub focused food at the bar.

16 rotating taps feature craft beer from across Australia, with a particular focus on New South Wales brews. Expect to see beers from the likes of Balter, The Grifter, and 4 Pines. If it’s something else you’re looking for, perhaps an international craft beer, there’s a decent bottle and can list. There are also regular tap takeovers here featuring beers that you don’t usually see in Sydney. The Welcome Hotel was the Queensland Point of Origin venue for Sydney’s Craft Beer Week in 2018, and is one of the handful of venues pouring Feral Brewing’s biannual ‘Tusk’ beer.

For non-beer drinkers, the same dedication to quality extends to the wine and spirits list. It’s not as extensive as the beer offering, but there are enough carefully selected quality wines and spirits to please most.

For food, its pub favourites like steak, salads, pasta, and fish & chips. There’s also an outdoor popup, Il Carbone, which serves up delicious South American-style charcoal chicken. In the dining room, its a more refined menu with an Italian focus.
