MELBOURNE | Trinket is a new cocktail bar on Flinders Lane, occupying the space that housed Italian bar and restaurant Terra Rossa for almost a decade. We were recently invited to check out the revamped space and were keen to see how big the changes were.
The former entrance is now the exit, with the entrance being located next door to this. Faced with a giant music box doll, the turn of a special key opens a door that leads to the bar. The exposed brick walls and high ceiling compliment the luxe, art-deco, jewellery box theme complete with mirrors, jewels and gems. Upstairs you’ll find plush couches and stools, along with a fire place and some very low lighting. Hidden downstairs, and entered through a secret cabinet door, is a second bar, with a more intimate feel that the space above.
At its heart, Trinket is cocktail bar, and the menu features an assortment of signature creations along with the classics. For beer drinkers there’s a selection of mostly local craft and not-so-craft beer on tap and in bottles. For those who want wine, there’s around 20 options on offer, both local and international. We highly recommend the Dark Lady, a tasty combination of Sipsmith VJOP, beetroot, raspberry, dry Madeira sherry, lemon, and egg white. The Centre Stage, with Rhubarb infused sake, Espolon tequila, lemon and passionfruit is also fantastic.
For food, head chef Telina Menzies has put together a selection of tasty European influenced dishes. Flatbreads are made using a 72 hour slow ferment dough and come with an assortment of traditional and more creative toppings. From the simple tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil to the zingy broccolini, white anchovy, buffalo mozzarella and lemon, there’s a lot to like. Other highlights include the charred octopus with pickled grapes, green raisins, pine nuts and baby herbs, and the Aperol Spritz kingfish with pomegranate jewels, samphire, and black rice crackers. If you’ve got a group, the $35 per person feed me option gets you and your friends six plates of the chef’s favourites.
Trinket can seem a bit gimmicky at first but the theme works well. It’s a bit of fun, with an environment is conducive to chilled conversation. The cocktails are fantastic, and the food good enough that you could actually enjoy a proper meal here. It’s the kind of place that locals can enjoy and the visitors from out of town will love.
