MELBOURNE | Uitgang Bar is a small neighbourhood bar by Fraser Rettie and Craig “Grum” Knight from Exit Brewing, and their friend and fellow beer nerd David Pike. They’d been looking for a space to open a bar for a while, and when this opportunity came up, just around the corner from Rettie’s home, he knew that this was the time to make the bar a reality.

It’s a small, narrow space with a lot of exposed brick, and an assortment of tables, seats and bar stools. A retro video game machine sits at the front left of the venue as you walk in, with a couple of screens showing live sport. A corridor at the rear leads to an intimate beer garden, which will, amongst being used by patrons, will also have a few hop plants when growing season arrives.

The bar has 10 taps, which feature a rotating selection of of styles with four of Exit’s brews, one of Kaiju’s beers (they share brewing facilities in Dandnenong with Exit), and five beers from other independent local breweries. Spirits and wines follow the ‘local is best’ philosophy. There’s no kitchen on site, but customers are more than welcome to bring in food from nearby restaurants, from which there’s no shortage of choice.

The bar also has a rare license which allows them to sell alcohol almost 24 hours a day, and the owners are keen to explore the idea of hosting screenings of live overseas sports events on at all kinds of weird and wonderful hours if the demand is there.

And if you’re wondering what Uitgang means, it’s the Dutch and Flemish word for Exit – a reference to Belgium, the inspiration from which the journey that led to Exit Brewing being formed started.
