LONDON | Wild Card Brewery in Walthamstow is a fantastic spot and really exemplifies what craft brewing is all about. It was started by three friends who decided to give up their day jobs to do something that they loved. Wild Card started as a cuckoo, or gypsy brewers, relying on the generosity of others to help them get their first beers produced. When they managed to start getting their beers in local pubs and shops and realised that demand was growing at a much faster rate than they had anticipated, the trio – Jaega Wise, William John Harris, and Andrew Birkby pulled together enough loans from locals to open the current brewery in 2014.
The brewery is located in an industrial estate, and is very simple – the bar is inside with a small about of space, with a much bigger outdoor area full of benches and stools being where most of the non-brewing action takes place for customers. The core range of Wild Card’s beers is available on tap, along with some seasonal beers and interesting brews from other local independent breweries. The Queen of Diamonds, a continuously hopped IPA, is one of our favourites, with beautiful aromas of lychee and grapefruit. For those who don’t like beer, there’s also cider, wine and spirits on offer.
There’s no food, but you can grab a wood fired pizza from the DoughBro Pizza van which is parked to the side. If it’s not there (you can check online), you’re free to bring your own food. There’s usually some live music on, and the atmosphere is really casual and community focused, just the way we like it.
