TOKYO | Akomeya Shinjuku, in the NEWoMan shopping complex is a place that will make you think about rice in ways you’ve never thought about it before. Many of us treat rice as a side dish, or something that you simply eat as part of another dish but at Akomeya, rice is king. In the store you’ll find an assortment of different premium rices sourced from across Japan, and polished in store. Hokkaido Yumepirika, Yamagata Tsuyahime, Toyama Milky Queen, and Niigata Uonuma Koshihikari are just a few of the varieties on offer, and it’s an eye opening experience when you try some of this rice and realise that the quality of rice you use in your dishes can make such a difference to the final taste and texture.

Along with rice, Akomeya also sells food products (many of which relate to rice of course) from across Japan – mirin, sake, togorashi, condiments and the like. It’s more spacious and brighter than that Ginza flagship, but there’s no restaurant like in Ginza. Stop in and pick up a few things – we love the sample rice pack which contains five different varieties of Akomeya’s most popular rices.
