MELBOURNE | Located in an unassuming basement in Chinatown, Bar Clara is an small bar that’s all about modern cocktails made with seasonal Victorian produce and predominantly Australian spirits.
The small space features low lighting, bar seating, comfortable green velvet couches, and back-lit plant boxes for greenery. It all combines for a relaxing, intimate atmosphere.
Owner Joel McKenzie is aiming to shake up people’s perception of cocktails, using techniques usually found in cutting edge kitchens. The result is some very tasty and unique drinks. For a sweet banana hit, the Banoffee Special with Starward whisky, lemon, and demerara syrup with a caramelised merringue atop is a winner. Also great is the Fire & Earth. It’s a concoction of tequila, fresh beetroot, lemon, and habanero bitters served with a salt rim and blazed rosemary garnish
If it’s something other than cocktails you want, there’s a small selection of local craft beers and local/international wines.
For food it’s simple bar snacks like smoked olives, house marinated olives, duck liver parfait, and a rotating cheese board.
