MELBOURNE | Biff Tannin’s opened recently without much fanfare. No press releases, no blogger events, no social media saturation – just a quiet opening in the first week of January down a side street off Sydney Road. Things don’t say secret for long in this town though and through word of mouth Biff Tannin’s has already proven itself to be a new local’s favourite.
Biff Tannin’s is a wine bar that does things a bit differently than normal, with the aim of “simulating the cellar door experience in Brunswick”. The space is very open, with the outdoor front section and indoor section blending together seamlessely. The fitout is simple, with lots of concrete and wood, and ample seating be it on the couches at the back or large tables out the front. It’s really casual, and feels like a proper local’s spot.
Next to the bar are a number of wines in fancy looking contraptions, above this is a chalkboard listing all of the wines available by the glass, along with a suggested food pairing – cheese, cured meats, chocolate and the like. You’ve got two options when ordering your wine by the glass – either you can pay as you go and have the glass poured for you, as is the usual case, or you can put your card behind the bar and exchange it for a swipe card which lets you pour a glass of wine yourself with a swipe of the card at those fancy contraptions.
The wines on offer are varied, including a mixture of local and international wines covering styles familiar and unfamiliar. There’s enough on offer to satisfy beginners and wine veterans, and the staff are more than happy to help you decide which wine is right for you.
Something we were very impressed with at Biff Tannin’s is that while its ostensibly a wine bar, drinkers of other alcoholic beverages aren’t relegated to a secondary status. There are four craft beers on tap, and a surprisingly good bottle/can selection featuring beers from breweries like Mountain Goat, Brewcult, Boatrocker, Oskar Blues, Rogue, and Brew Dog just to name a few. The spirit selection is equally well thought out, particularly the extensive whiskey selection which features a mixture of well known and more obscure brands. Boilermakers anyone?
Along with charcuterie, Biff Tannin’s also offers a small selection of pizzas for those looking for a bit to eat.
Biff Tannin’s might only be a few weeks old, but we’ve already visited a few times. As Back To The Future’s Biff Tannen would likely say – don’t be a butthead, just make like a tree and get yourself to Biff Tannin’s for a drink.
