MELBOURNE | Box Hill Central is an exciting melting pot of food, fresh produce, culture, and more food. A popular destination for the local Asian population due to the abundance of Asian grocery stores and eateries, it is now becoming a hub that attracts all cultures and backgrounds thanks to the increasing variety of restaurants and cafes popping up.
From Japanese yakitori and traditional Chinese noodle soups, to Asian fusion sushi rice burgers, vegan black sesame ice cream and matcha crepe cakes, there is something here for everyone. The addition of multicultural eateries such as a Greek souvlaki stall and modern brunch café’s also contributes to the array of things on offer, accurately mirroring the inclusive and culturally diverse nature of the Australian population.
The City Lane was invited to experience all that Box Hill Central has to offer by sampling the produce at as many different eateries as we could. By the end of it, we left with full bellies and an enriched perspective on the unlimited potential that this unique centre has. As well as eating and drinking our way through the world’s cuisines, we thoroughly enjoyed the cultural immersion we experienced whilst spending a few hours at Box Hill Central.
Looking past the crowded feeling in this enclosed space, it is a truly memorable experience to observe the interactions between people of a different culture. From grandparents smiling and conversing in another language with their young grandchildren, to a family quietly seated around a table busy sipping from their bowls of soup at lunchtime. And walking past a grocery store, it’s hard not to notice two people sounding like they are having an argument, when in actual fact they are just trying to decide what to have for dinner. In Australia’s multicultural society, we are extremely lucky to be exposed to such a mixture of people, cultures and experiences. Open acceptance and integration is the only way we will continue to grow and develop as a nation, and as a worldwide population.
