Bright Palace, Docklands

MELBOURNE | Popular yum cha / dim sum venue, Gold Leaf Chinese Restaurant, closed their Docklands location in early 2024. Thankfully, the space was taken over by the family behind popular Bentleigh East spots Yum Cha AYCE Restaurant, and Peking Duck House. They relaunched the space as Bright Palace, and I recently popped in for What’s on Melbourne to take a look.

Bright Palace is a bright and sizeable space, with enough room to hold 300 people. At lunch, its all about dim sum, continuing the Cantonese tradition that began with Gold Leaf. Select from around 100 options on offer as staff zip around the tables with carts filled with small plates.

There’s all of the favourites on offer. Things like char siu bao, assorted dumplings, hai kim (deep fried crab claws) braised chicken feet, steamed black bean pig’s tripe, congee, and cheung fun. There’s also sweet options like custard egg tarts and mango pudding.

At night, the menu switches to an al la carte one, with a selection of classic Cantonese dishes, and a few things from other regions. It’s all designed to share, with rice and noodle dishes, and a whole lot of tasty things cooked on the wok.

Premium seafood is a particular focus, with dishes like stewed fish with diced bitter melon and bean curd skin, Hakka-style black pepper claypot, and braised eel with black garlic. Bright Palace’s Peking duck is exceptional, and they’ll be launching a Peking duck dinner set soon.

To drink, there’s an assortment of non-alcoholic options, Western and Chinese, along with a selection of spirits and wine at all price points.
