MELBOURNE | The Dan O’Connell Hotel is one of those old pubs that you see closing all over Melbourne, and are thankful still exists. It’s one of Carlton’s oldest local pubs, dating back to 1884, and has stayed relevant by updating the things that count while keeping old school the things that don’t need changing. The interior isn’t fancy, and the beer garden and tables out the front are a great spot to enjoy days when then sun is out.
It’s an unpretentious venue that draws a mixed crowd. Folks who have been coming here for decades and just want a drink, those looking to watch some live sport on the big screen, and those drawn by nightly events that include things like poetry slams and stand-up comedy gigs. There’s also a pool table for those who want a game.
There’s been a focus on craft beer in bottles here for a few years, and slowly the taps have been becoming craftier too. The Dan O’Connell was recently purchased by the folks behind Fitzroy craft beer favourite The Catfish, so you can expect the beer selection to get even better over the coming months. Those who just want their traditional favourites needn’t fear however, as there will always be a tap dedicated to Guinness, while the craft beer selection will feature a few accessible options as well as things to appeal to more adventurous drinkers. There are also regular craft brewery tap takeovers, so keep an eye out on the pub’s social media channels.
Those looking for a feed will be impressed by the food here. It’s all about pub classics done well, using quality ingredients, and we’re happy to report that the food hits the mark, especially the sizeable chicken parma and the fish & chips.
