MELBOURNE | Husband-and-wife duo Dennis and Monique Chan gave up their day jobs in pharmacy to open Demochi in Sydney in 2019. Inspired after a trip to Japan, where they came across a place that was deep trying mochi, the decided to bring the concept to Australia, with a twist. A few months ago, Dennis and Monique opened their first Melbourne location. I popped in to take a look for What’s on Melbourne.
Located down the back end of Midtown Plaza, the colourful lights and frontage of Demochi are hard to miss. In the display, you’ll see an assortment of enticing, colourful glazed options to choose from. There’s flavours like Thai milk tea, pandan coconut, and Lotus Biscoff.
Being a hybrid of mochi and a doughnut, each bite gives you the chew of mochi, with the external crispiness of a doughnut. Beyond mochi doughnuts, there’s also a small selection of single slice and larger cakes and tarts, soft serve ice-cream, and limited creations like the unique fried chicken ice-cream.
If you’re thirsty, there’s also a selection of alternative flavoured lattes and drinks like strawberry cream matcha, black sesame, and mango sago.
