MELBOURNE | Mountain Goat Richmond is one of the old hands in Melbourne’s craft beer scene, and has seen a lot of changes since it was founded in 1997 by Cam Hines and Dave Bonighton. The biggest of those changes was of course the purchase of the brewery by global food and beverage behemoth Asahi in 2015. Regardless of where you stand in the ongoing argument about whether independent breweries should or shouldn’t sell to larger breweries, the fact of the matter is that Mountain Goat still make fantastic beer. In fact, ever since being purchased by Asahi, they’ve been able to make more interesting beer outside of their core range than ever before.
The core range Hightail, Steam, and Summer Ales are as popular as ever, but why we like coming to this large warehouse space is for the fun atmosphere, and to try some of the special and seasonal brews. Various series like Rare Breed, In Breed, and Barrel Breed aim to show off different types of beers, and come out at different times of the year. Recent favourites include the 7.7% IPA “Attack of the Killer Hops”, and the “Pulped Fiction”, a 7.8% Blood Orange Double IPA. Also be sure to check out what beer’s on Randy the ‘Hopinator’, a kind of tank filled with, well anything, depending on the week, with one of the beers pumped through the tank to be infused with the flavours before being served. Think a stout being pushed through coffee beans, or a hefeweizen being pushed through orange peel.
If you’re hungry, a small kitchen to the side of the bar serves up a selection of tasty pizzas which hit the spot.
