MELBOURNE | Mr West Bar And Bottleshop is one of the new wave of bars that’s been opening up recently in Footscray, and brings another craft beer spot to a part of town already lucky enough to have great craft beer at places like Bar Josephine, Up In Smoke, and Fox In The Corn. The former $2 shop has been stripped back to its bones, and features a bottle shop downstairs, and bar upstairs. The upstairs bar features exposed concrete and timber, and upcycled furniture across a variety of seating and table options. It’s spacious, airy, and casual, and there’s also a rooftop courtyard.

The brains behind Mr West are Caleb Baker and Josh Hodges, who both have a hospitality and sales rep background. They know their stuff, and can be found tending the bar as well as making sure its stocked with only the good stuff. Across the 24 taps you’ll find not only great craft beer but also cider, wine and cocktails.

The beers on tap are a mixture of local and international brews, with a wide variety of styles on offer. They guys are passionate about what they sell, and all of the staff are well trained to be able to explain the characteristics of each beer, meaning it’s a place that appeals to those in the early stages of their craft beer journey as well as seasoned veterans. Wines have the same attention paid to them, and the list features a diverse range of drops from the usual styles through to interesting natural wines and less familar varietals like the Spanish Vallformosa. Cocktails range from the classics though to more creative drops like a ‘Move Over Clover’, a Mezcal, hibiscus, and lemon twist on a clover club.

If there’s nothing that tickles your fancy at the bar, you can always buy something from the bottle shop downstairs and bring it up. Also keep an eye out on Mr West’s social media channels for details of tap takeovers, masterclasses, and other events.

The food menu is short and features cheese and charcuterie (and pork crackling!), but patrons are allowed to bring in food ordered from nearby restaurants if looking for something more substantial.
