MELBOURNE| Rice Workshop is an established institution in Melbourne and the one in Chinatown has been around for more than five years. Famous for their Japanese inspired donburi (rice bowls) and bento boxes, the food at Rice Workshop is tasty, fast and great value. We were recently invited to try their new Roast Wagyu Beef Donburi dish which has been created by Michelin awarded Japanese chef, Masahiko Yomoda. This $9.90 dish sent our taste buds into a frenzy and we were blown away with the value.
It’s not just about rice bowls and bento boxes, with the extensive menu also featuring things like udon, curry, and ramen bowls. The dishes are great value and well portioned, with the menu priced between $9.50 to $14.90.
The Roast Wagyu Beef Donburi may just trump the current signature dish as our favourite thing on the menu. Chef Yamoda says, “this is a pretty fancy Roast Wagyu dish as we are using the best Wagyu available to us. The trick with Wagyu is to slice thinly, cook lightly and prepare a sauce that enhances and meats tender ‘melt in your mouth’ quality. I finish off my dish with our signature sweet sauce, truffle aioli and a freshly poached egg for taste, presentation and balance.”
The service is super-fast, much like the Japanese Shinkansen. Our food came to us in lightening speed, served hot and fresh. Perfect if you have rushed out of the office for quick lunch, or want something filling and affordable but don’t have the time to wait. The Rice Workshop have a number of locations around Melbourne so go and try the Wagyu Beef Donburi and the other tasty offerings on their menu.
