SYDNEY | Stockade Barrel Room is the latest beer venue to open in Sydney’s craft beer hub of Marrickville. While Stockade have been brewing since 2015 (out of their Smeaton Grange brewery), this 250 person capacity barrel room takes things to the next level.
Designed by local design studio RAD, the old factory space plays on its industrial heritage with more traditional and warming ‘pub’ aspects woven throughout. Think terracotta tiles, wood furniture, steel screens and lightboxes. It all comes together to create a unique, cool yet welcoming spot. Something you’ll notice as soon as you walk in is the extensive number (200 to be exact) of barrels piled atop each other. The Marrickville space is home to Stockade’s barrel ageing program, and is where you’ll find beers like Old Money biding their time until their ready for release.
On the taps you’ll find Stockade’s four core range beers – 8 Bit, Chop Shop, Duel and Hop Splicer, along with seven rotating taps featuring seasonal and one-off brews from Stockade and other Australian craft breweries that the Stockade crew enjoy. And yes, tasting paddles are available. Out of the core range the 8 Bit, a 6.5% ABV West Coast IPA, is always a good option, and of course Old Money if it’s on is a must try. It’s an annual Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout release that tends to clock in at around 12% ABV, and one of the best examples of the style in Australia.
For those who don’t like beer, there are still lots of reasons to visit here. Stockade works with Urban Winery Project and Australian craft distilleries for its non-beer drinks list. Cocktails features spirits infused with hops and wines are blended on-site and aged in Stockade beer barrels.
For food, the former rotating food truck has made way for permanent truck Baby Rey burgers, serving a selection of Stockade beer paired burgers, steaks on Thursday and an assortment of other tasty dishes.
