TOKYO | Tonkatsu Suzuki is a place that we discovered by chance while wandering through the warren of shops in Tokyo Station and, as is often the case in Japan, a place that has become one of our favourites when in Tokyo. As the name suggests, the focus at this small, simple restaurant is tonkatsu, that glorious deep fried, panko crumbed pork dish. You have a choice between fatty rosu (loin) or lean hire (fillet), and our tip is to always go for the hire – it’s cheaper than the rosu and the succulent, melt in your mouth fat enhances the flavour of each bite. There are a few high grade options on the menu, but the standard is fantastic and offers the best value.

Whichever you choose, it’s be accompanied with rice, pickles, miso soup, and shredded cabbage, and green tea. There are free refills of rice, cabbage, and tea too, so you don’t have to worry about going hungry (although the standard serving really is enough). Sauce caddies grace every table and bar spot, and contain tonkatsu sauce, and two kinds of salad dressing – sesame and yuzu. We tend to split our cabbage into two piles and put the yuzu dressing on half and sesame dressing on the other half as both are fantastic.

As for the tonkatsu sauce, the caddy means that you can put on only as much as you need on a bite-by-bite basis, meaning you get to maintain optimal panko crispiness for as long as possible, which contrasts beautifully with the juicy, tender pork.

The convenient location of Tonkatsu Suzuki means that there’s always a way to fit in a quality tonkatsu when visiting Japan, no matter how short your stay. And because it’s not one of the more famous Tonkatsu places in town, there’s never more than a short wait for a seat. There’s even a spot to store your luggage while you eat.
