TRAVEL | Craft beer has gone from strength to strength in recent years and this has given rise to a new kind of traveller – the craft beer traveller. Just as the rise of the foodie led to people basing their trips around food, the rise of craft beer has led to people travelling with the primary reason of visiting new breweries, bars and pubs, and trying new beer.
Whenever we visit a city we make sure to seek out the best beer in town, and have created many a craft beer city guide to help you find the beer around. One of the best cities that we’ve ever been to for craft beer is Portland, Oregon and this will come as little surprise to anyone who knows a bit about good beer.
The North-western city is home to over 60 breweries, and that’s before you even start to look at the amazing craft beer bars and the other Oregon breweries that have brewpubs in the city. Expedia recently launched their ‘Kegs of Glory’ campaign and are offering one lucky person the chance to win a trip for two to Portland. Head over to the official Kegs of Glory website to enter – all you have to do enter is to select your favourite brewery out of a list of Brisbane and Melbourne breweries and answer two short questions.
Why Melbourne and Brisbane? Well why not? Both cities have numerous fantastic breweries and any craft beer traveller will be spoiled for choice when they’re in town.
In Brisbane you’ve got a favourite of our Bacchus Brewing. They’re a family owned brewery about a half hour drive out of the centre of town, that’s famous for brewing a varied assortment of experimental and limited release beers each week. Think Peanut Brittle Gose, Sex, Drugs and Rocky Road, and Belgian Mocha Coffee Stout.
Brisbane is also home to another favourite of ours, Ballistic Beer Co. Their brewery has only been open for just over a year but they’ve already built a reputation for making fantastic beers. Think Cold Brew Coffee Brown Ale, Australian Psycho IPA, and Oaked Citra XPA.
Down in Melbourne meanwhile, it’s hard to know where to start. Moon Dog Brewing is one of our favourites, and like Bacchus have a reputation for making beers a bit different to the rest. They’re not scared of trying interesting flavours and techniques and the results are often fantastic. Think Thunder Lips Yuzu Red IPA, Cake Hole Black Forest Stout, and Curtly Ambrosia Pineapple, Chilli and Honey Pale Ale.
Another of our Melbourne favourites, Stomping Ground, have one of the best brewpubs in town and back it up with fantastic beers. The PRIDElweiss Peach Witbier is a great drop, as is the refreshing Gipps St Pale Ale and the Upside Down Brown Ale.
