SYDNEY | BlackFont Brewhouse is a place you really have to know about if you want to visit. In fact, we were only made aware of its existence when we were at Batch Brewing one day and got talking to another patron. To find it you need to walk through a super industrial part of Marrickville, away from where the rest of the action is happening and down a lane way through the garage door of what was a printing warehouse. Find it though, and you’ll be rewarded with something quite special.

It feels like you’ve walked into someone’s backyard garage – the space is small, and there’s the brewery dog walking around being friendly. The dog isn’t the only friendly being in here either – the staff are super friendly and the whole place has a real local’s vibe about it. Staff are really keen to talk about the brewery and each of the beers, and soon enough you won’t know which beer to try first. Thankfully, the staff can also help with that – our advice is to get a tasting paddle which gives you four very generous pours of whichever beers you choose.

All of the beers are produced in small batches, 50 to 200 litres, and there’s a lot of experimentation with all kinds of styles going on. There’s no core range as as such here, just a selection of interesting beers across the 12 taps. Lagers, saisons, IPAs, hefeweizens just to name a few can be found here, and there’s often versions of the beers with unusual twists and additions. Again, the staff are more than happy to explain what’s going with all of the beers if you ask.

There’s not much advertising for BlackFont Brewhouse, and that’s just the way the owners like it. It’s all about community and word of mouth, and you won’t be disappointed if you make the effort to pop in and say hi.
