KITAKATA | Kitami Hachirobei is a store that specialises in lacquerware, and has been in operation since the Edo period. Laquerware is one of the things that Kitakata is renowned for, and many of the craftspeople in this town come from a long line of laquerware artisans. Throughout the shop you’ll find a variety of things to purchase, ranging from trinkets and cutlery to kitchenware and furniture. If you’re lucky, you might even be shown the workshop out the back by the owner – everything sold here is made on site, by hand.

Next door is a cafe, which sells a variety of meals, sweets, tea, coffee and the like, all served using Kitami Hachirobei laqureware of course.

Paul has a strong inquisitive nature that drives him to look beneath the surface in order to discover what really makes a city and its people tick, and what better way to do this than over a good meal or drink, with a city’s locals, at places that people who live in that city actually frequent.
