MELBOURNE | Korea Town the restaurant, not to be confused with Korea Town, the nearby CBD precinct, is a Korean restaurant that’s popular for its extensive menu. Open until 2am every day except Sunday, it’s a great option for late night Korean feed in the city. I recently visited for What’s on Melbourne.
Walk inside, and you’re greeted with a large, open space, with Korean music clips and pop culture clips playing on TVs. If that’s not your vibe, keep walking and you’ll find a low lit, narrow section that curls around the rear of the venue, filled with, intimate booths.
The menu features over 100 items, from ubiquitous favourites to things not as common in Melbourne. There’s multiple versions of tteokbokki, fried chicken, jeon (savoury pancakes), and gimbap to get you started. While not a K-BBQ restaurant, there’s no shortage of barbecued meats on the menu, like grilled beef ribs, pork bulgogi, and and soy dakgalbi.
There’s also a wide selection of soups an stews, rice and noodle dishes, and raw dishes. A great option is one of the platters. The jokbal set gets you a generous share serve of braised pork trotters with eight sides and makgusu (buckwheat noodles), while haemul-jjim gets you a saucy plate of mixed prawns, mussels, octopus, crab, and calamari on noodles.
I highly recommend the ganjang-gejang set. It comes with fresh raw crab marinated in soy sauce; assorted hoe (raw seafood) like salmon, abalone, and octopus; and boiled quail eggs.
Drinks wise, all bases are covered with Asahi and Orion on tap, cans of Korean beer, makgeolli, soju, and soft drinks.
