MELBOURNE | Neptune Food & Wine is a casual wine bar in South Yarra with some serious pedigree behind it. Onwers Nic Coulter and Simon Blacher (BKK, Hanoi Hannah, Tokyo Tina) and Dave and Michael Parker (Pastuso, San Telmo, Palermo) have created a casual spot that’s all about quality wines and modern Mediterranean share plates.

The two story, 140 capacity space is long and narrow, with low lighting, exposed brick, timber, and polished concrete floors. The bar is located out the front, as are the wine fridges which are full of options to drink in or take home. This leads into the middle dining section, with a mixture of tables and booths, with a lounge and fireplace. It all comes together nicely to create the kind of space you want to be enjoying wine and food in.

The wine list features something for everyone, with a fantastic selection of over 300 wines ranging from the familiar and accessible to the more obscure and interesting. If you need help deciding what to order, the knowledgeable staff are more than capable when it comes to finding the right wine for you. For non-wine drinkers there’s also some decent craft beer and quality spirits and cocktails.

The modern Mediterranean menu features simple food which pairs well with wine – think pasta, steak frites, chicken liver parfait, fritto misto, salami jaffles, and a few desserts. Of note is the tinned fish selection of the menu, which features an array of tinned delights. Think Cockles (Cabo De Pena) in Calabrian chilli oil and lemon, anchovies (Cuca) with tomato and red pepper, and Ramon Pena mussels with paprika, pickled green tomato and shaved parmesan.
